Man Arrested for Stealing Bicycle in Front of Courthouse

Hector Pineda had just appeared in El Monte Superior Court on an open alcohol container violation when a County mail deliveryman saw Pineda destroying a wrought iron fence near the courthouse's entrance in an attempt to steal a locked bicycle. The deliveryman reported the incident to security, and Pineda was found walking the bike down an exit ramp. Pineda claimed he owned the bike and explained that he forgot his keys for the lock, however a Covina resident arrived shortly after the attempted theft and identified his bike.

Pineda, an unemployed welder, asked sheriff's personnel if he could bid on the repair job to fix the fence. He was booked at the El Monte Police Station on Wednesday, July 20, for felony vandalism and petty theft.
